    The standard approach to laboratory instrumentation involves manufacturing systems with propriety software and electronics. The long term viability of this equipment is then dependant on professional support from the vendor. The problem occurs when the vendor goes out of business or discontinues the support of that instrument. In this case the customer may not be able to repair or improve the equipment and thus becoming essentially scrap.

    The evolution of open source software technologies to electronics and hardware has enabled a fresh alternative to this traditional laboratory automation paradigm. Much of this progress has been driven by Python, RepRap and Arduino.
